Announced Optical Drives up to a Terabyte





Sony and Panasonic have announced standard optical discs Archival Disc («Archive disk"). Capacity drives that are designed for long-term storage can be up to a terabyte, according to a press release from Sony.

Will be released three versions of discs: 300 GB, 500 GB and one terabyte. First released 300 GB disk - it will happen in the summer of 2015. How much will the drive, Sony and Panasonic are not specified yet.


Drive 300 gigabytes bilateral, on each side will accommodate three information layers. Track pitch will be 0.225 micrometer. Drive as Blu-ray, will be designed to work with a laser with a wavelength of 405 nanometers.

Drive provides only a single record (write-once). If something is written to disk, then overwrite it or append to it additional data will be impossible.


Increase the capacity of optical disc technology managed by eliminating crosstalk. Typically, the more noise, the shorter the distance between the tracks. Capacity CD, recall is 700 megabytes, and Blu-ray - to 128 gigabytes.

Sony and Panasonic have made it clear that the development of new drive have relied on optical disks because they provide reliable storage in particular, are resistant to humidity and temperature influences.
