Antivirus for Linux, Matter of Courtesy

Antivirus for Linux?? again? Again, because the new generations-not in the sense of youth-is getting closer
to distributions like Ubuntu , Linux Mint , openSUSE and Mageia -cite four examples of recent launch that
would be worth perfectly for a comfortable approach to GNU / Linux - and it's always good to be
informed.

Today we will see how a small tool can help us in specific tasks, such as checking for any problems on
our Linux desktop, or if that is not a problem in our system, it is in other ... In Windows , to be exact .
First, there are viruses for Linux, also trojans, but are little more than an anecdote. Do not worry one bit
about it. Whenever you install apps from the official distribution repositories or trusted sources , it's really
hard to fall victim to a classic Malware.

Where there other malware of all types and tonnage is in Windows. And I'm sure many people around you
use Windows, and share files with those people. It is for this reason that you need a antivirus on Linux, to
avoid the problem to others , or even yourself , if you are a user platform. Ie, courtesy and consistency.
However, having a memory resident virus, as if you were a Windows Linux, is somewhat extreme in most
cases.

At this point you could install one of the traditional antivirus solutions of the best known firms, as some
have Linux version, and use them occasionally. But neither makes sense, when in GNU / Linux hold
ClamAV an Open Source platform and antivirus maybe not to the level of the big brands, is highly
regarded. In addition, it has in the repositories of your distribution, so you can read these lines as installing
it.

But do not look in the application menu, because you will not find. By default ClamAV works through the
dreaded terminal (only he should fear for his power). There are graphical interfaces for ClamAV, but our
purpose now so simple it's not worth it. We might even venture to say that you will not want to use
ClamAV in any other way when you see how easy and fast it is to do it through the console. Today, in any
case, we will only deal with the most basic aspects of this software::
update the database and perform a scan .

Open the terminal and upgrade runs always as root

freshclam
Once completed the upgrade, you can proceed to examine the computer properly, for which you do not
need root permissions , for the most part. If the analysis finds any infected in a directory where you do not
have file permissions, you can not remove it unless the order comes from "higher authorities" (root user).
We will show a standard example of analysis and then explain it:

clamscan-r / home /
The above would be the basic analysis, in which all consider ClamAV user's home directory , shortcuts
and hidden directories included-even if there are more users, also consider your space. This indicates the
"-r" parameter is the scan is recursive. The route, of course, can be changed as you like it and can scan
removable devices. That's it. An update from time to time when you play and analysis. You do not have to
do anything else.

Performance wise ClamAV picture on these lines is demonstrating what it takes to a team analyzing a
midrange disk almost 1.5 Terabytes and scanned 69,501 files. It is relatively fast and stressed not just the
machine , you can be doing whatever you want in between. Finally, if you are interested to know more
features of ClamAV, running on the console:

 clamscan -r /
This is used for checking  all files on the computer, displaying the name of each file

clamscan -r --bell -i /
This command is used to check all files on the computer, but only display infected files and ring a bell when found
